Top 10 Comedy Movies of All Time

Is it possible to salvage a bad day? We’ve got this. Our top 10 best comedy movies of Hollywood include everything from girl films to thought-provoking documentaries sprinkled with a dash of fun. You might be sick of the endless summer days, but this list has all the golden elixir you need to get it through.

There are a few key elements that moviegoers look for in a successful comedy. First, the film’s premise is critical because cliches fade over time, and only those who dare to take risks remain. The cast is next, and a terrible script can be redeemed by a fantastic cast and an outstanding performance.

A subgenre of Hollywood comedy is dominated by actors like Kevin Hart, who carries the entire picture on their shoulders. If these two boxes are left unchecked, the film can either be a great blast or fail to make it.

Many comedies on this list, from classics to more recent releases, with plenty of dark comedies and parodies thrown in to keep things exciting and make you laugh out loud at your computer screen. Check out our ranking of the ten best comedy movies of all time below:

Borat

This is one of the classic comedy movies. To put it mildly, this Larry Charles comedy will have you howling with laughter. Many of the sequences in this black humor mockumentary are entirely unscripted, making it a one-person show.

To make things even more ridiculous, Sacha Baron Cohen stars in the film as Borat Sagdiyev, a fictional Kazakh journalist who visits the United States to record a documentary about how Americans interact with outsiders.

Throughout the film, Borat conducts interviews with everyday Americans who treat him as an outsider who doesn’t understand anything about their way of life. Borat Subsequent film, the film’s sequel, was released in 2020.

Cohen won the Golden Globe for Best Actor for his work in the film, which was widely lauded and made a healthy profit at the box office. Comedy enthusiasts won’t want to miss this one.

Dumb and Dumber

This 1994 buddy comedy is plenty of slapstick comedy, so it had to be cut. The picture has a high level of humor because Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are in charge. The film uses the characters and their absolute lack of intelligence to tell a story worth seeing at least once, much like most old comedies.

The story revolves around two Providence, Rhode Island, friends, Lloyd Christmas (Carrey) and Harry Dunne (Daniels). They set out on a cross-country road trip to Aspen, Colorado, to return a briefcase full of cash that they believed had been left as a mistake when it was a ransom for their friend.

It’s been a cult favorite since its premiere. The picture was directed by Peter Farrelly and has since gained a reputation as one of the best movies of all time.

Superbad

Even though Seth Rogen and his writing partner Evan Goldberg wrote this script when they were still in high school, they were too old to star in it when Hollywood finally made it a reality.

They cast Michael Cera and Jonah Hill as two high school best friends who attempt to lose their virginity on a wild night of drinking and drug use.

Nobody could have imagined that Jonah Hill would one day be nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in a Martin Scorsese picture at that time. This film also began Emma Stone’s career.

The Blues Brothers

After the departure of the original cast and Lorne Michaels from Saturday Night Live, the show’s most memorable sketches made the transfer to the big screen simultaneously.

An orphanage rescue story told through the eyes of Jake and Elwood Blues is at the heart of The Blues Brothers, which is both hilarious and heartwarming in equal measure. That’s a problematic fusion, but they pulled it off (as demonstrated by the catastrophic sequel).

The Dictator

This film is a work of art by the makers of Borat. Larry Charles, who directed Borat, returns to direct this following Sacha Baron Cohen picture. Cohen plays Admiral General Aladeen opposite Anna Faris, Ben Kingsley, Jason Mansoukas, and an uncredited appearance by John C. Reilly in the film.

While in New York City, the dictatorial Republic of Wadya ruler Aladeen makes an appearance before the United Nations Security Council. A hitman hired by his uncle Tamir abducted him as he was making preparations, though.

Even while the political satire wasn’t a great smash with the critics, moviegoers have been gushing about it. The finest of Cohen in his element, he carries the entire show on his back and leaves the audience with no room for remorse. Cynics and satirists alike will find enough to laugh at in this entertaining movie.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

Road excursions are a familiar setting for comedy, and the majority of these are weak ripoffs of the classic film, Planes, Traina, and Autobust.

When John Hughes decided to stop making Brat Pack teen flicks, he made a movie about a salesman who travels from Chicago to New York with an uptight marketing executive portrayed by Steve Martin.

The vacation is a complete nightmare, and Candy drives Martin to the brink of sanity at every turn. Two years later, Hughes reunited with John Candy for Uncle Buck.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

The director and screenwriter helm the project, Wes Anderson, which stars an all-star cast. Ralph Fiennes, Adrien Brody, Tony Revolori, Willem Dafoe, Tilda Swinton, Saoirse Ronan, Mathieu Amalric, Owen Wilson, and many more are among the stars who appear in the film.

Gustave and Zero are the suspects in killing a wealthy dowager, and they start on a search for money and priceless Renaissance artwork against the backdrop of a growing fascist regime. The picture garnered mixed reviews from the critics, but it performed well at the box office and was nominated for nine Academy Awards.

Shaun of the Dead

What’s going through your mind, making you want to roll around on the ground, laughing? For you, this is precisely what you’ve been looking for. In Shaun of the Dead, the terrifying zombie stereotype is flipped. Simon Pegg plays the film’s protagonist.

Shaun is also a co-write by Wright and Pegg. With his friend Ed, played by Nick Frost, Shaun, and their loved ones fleeing the zombie outbreak to a local bar, he’s taken off guard by the zombie apocalypse.

Shaun, the sales advisor who lives the life of a loser, is only saved by an apocalyptic that forever alters his situation.

In addition to Pegg and Frost, the picture stars Kate Ashfield, Lucy Davis, Dylan Moran, Bill Nighy, and Penelope Wilton. It is the first in the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, including the films Hot Fuzz and The World’s End.

Home Alone

The Home Alone series has been a childhood favorite for decades. On those days when you’ve had enough of being an adult, this film is the perfect escape. In addition to Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, John Heard, and Catherine O’Hara, the picture is directed by Chris Columbus.

It features the talents of these and other actors as well. Culkin portrays Kevin, a cute kid who gets left behind when his family rushes off on a Christmas vacation.

Kevin, who is alone in the large house, defends it from two would-be intruders who are amused by the antics of a tiny child. Predominately the film’s humor comes from the absurdity of the two robbers who cannot steal anything.

It is because the child interferes in their plans. The film was nominated for multiple Golden Globe Awards and Oscars, including a few awards.

Mean Girls

On this list, there can be no omission of “The Great Gatsby.” There is no doubt that Mean Girls is the best of the bunch, thanks to its star-studded ensemble and its raucous comedy. Indeed, the movie embodies all that is great about the genre—directed by Mark Waters with Tina Fey as a writer and Tina Fey as a star.

Lindsay Lohan starred in the film written by Waters and directed by Fey. In her adolescence, Cady (Lindsay Lohan) was sent to Africa by her anthropologist parents to attend boarding school there.

When Cady’s family moves to the suburbs of Illinois, she finally has the opportunity to attend a public school, where she encounters the harsh, unspoken rules of popularity that divide her peers into close-knit groups.

A gang of stylish kids known as “the Plastics” take a liking to Cady by chance, and she soon realizes how their superficial clique got their name. See the movie to see just how sultry these gangs of young ladies can be.
